Oakland Zoo Animals Feast On Spilled Fruit From Monday's Truck Crash
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Animals at the Oakland Zoo enjoyed a feast of tropical fruit after a truck spilled its shipment on a freeway in Livermore Monday.
About 15,000 pounds of plantains and jackfruit were donated to the Oakland Zoo on Wednesday after the fruit truck overturned on Interstate 580.
Bears, giraffes and elephants dined on the treats, though zookeepers say some of the animals were initially hesitant to taste the unusual fruits.
The Alameda County Food Bank also received about 35,000 pounds of fruit, which was on its way to Oakland from Mexico.
Nobody was hurt when the fruit truck collided with a pickup in the Altamont Pass early Monday.
