Oakland Works On Tweaking Mariuana Growing Law

OAKLAND (KCBS) – Oakland city officials are working on amending the city's ordinance on growing medical marijuana to make sure it is in compliance with state marijuana laws.

Oakland became the first city in the United States last summer to adopt a law authorizing wholesale pot cultivation.

KCBS' Dave Padilla Reports:

It paved the way for large marijuana farms where pot can be grown, packaged and processed.  Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said the city council wants to amend the laws so there's a greater link between the pot farms and dispensaries.

"It is also linked to being non-profit and to other social services that are in the original state medial marijuana plan," she said.

Quan said she understands that city officials are entering a gray area.

"This is a new industry. The bottom line is that if you're going to have medical marijuana, it has to come from somewhere," said Quan.

She and the city council have agreed that medical marijuana farms cannot exceed 50,000 square feet. The amended pot ordinance could return to the council in two weeks.
