Oakland To Pay Legal Fees In Police Strip Search Case
OAKLAND (CBS/AP) -- The lawyers for two men whose pants were pulled down by Oakland police on a public street are getting more than $832,000 in legal fees paid by the city.
The Oakland City Council voted in closed session on Tuesday to pay the money to civil rights attorneys John Burris and Michael Haddad. The lawyers represent Spencer Troy Lucas and Kirby Bradshaw.
A federal judge ruled last summer that Lucas and Bradshaw had their pants pulled down by an officer on a busy street after their Cadillac was pulled over for no reason in 2005.
Officer Ingo Mayer handcuffed Lucas, pulled down his pants and shook his boxers against his genitals after pulling them down half way, as he asked Lucas whether he had drugs. Another officer searched Bradshaw at Mayer's direction.
