Oakland Police Chief Says Decision On Future Coming Soon
OAKLAND (KCBS) -- Police chief Anthony Batts said he hopes to decide by the end of the week whether he will stay in Oakland for the long-haul, after finding out last week he was not picked to become San Jose's top cop.
Batts' comments came as Mayor Jean Quan said she wants to rehire 10 laid off police officers.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
Batts said he will meet with Quan and other community leaders before he makes his decision.
"It's really been a pleasure working with the mayor," he said. "She is not just talking - she is backing her actions up and moving forward."
Quan said she plans to rehire 10 officers who were laid off in July, bringing the number of officers up to 666. Quan also announced four officers are being promoted to sergeant to enhance supervision, and she wants police vehicles to be prioritized for maintenance at the city garage.
Quan said Oakland still faces major budget challenges, but she doesn't plan more police layoffs.
