Oakland Police Arrest Suspected Drug Dealer After Lockdown Near High School
OAKLAND (KCBS) - An armed suspect was arrested on suspicion of selling drugs near McClymonds High School on Friday, after a search prompted the lockdown of the school, according to Oakland police.
The school was placed on lockdown around 11:30 a.m. as police pursued a person armed with a gun allegedly selling drugs a block or two from the school, according to Officer Johnna Watson of the Oakland Police Department.
Watson said the suspect tried to hide in the yards of nearby houses in the vicinity of 26th and Market streets. The suspect was eventually located following calls from residents, reporting the suspect's whereabouts.
"The community was extremely helpful with providing information on this armed suspect who was trying to conceal himself in some of the residential yards, so we want to thank the community for continuing to work with us," she said.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident around 12:30 p.m., with the school lockout ending shortly after. Watson said police also recovered the gun the suspect was allegedly carrying.
Police have not released the identity of the suspect. No one was hurt during the lockdown.
