Oakland Occupy Wall St. Protesters Take Down Fence At City-Owned Lot
OAKLAND (CBS SF / AP) -- Anti-Wall Street protesters in Oakland pushed down a chain-link fence surrounding a city-owned vacant lot where they planned a new encampment.
After a march of about 1,000 people Saturday, the Occupy Oakland protesters poured into the lot next to the renovated Fox Theater on Telegraph Avenue, as one organizer shouted "More Tents! More Tents!" over a loudspeaker.
Police removed an encampment Monday at Oakland City Hall, and city officials said they won't tolerate new camps.
The newspaper says officers Saturday remained low key and did not engage protesters.
City officials said in a statement that police have a "non-confrontational strategy" to prevent new encampments, but gave no specifics.
A police spokesman had no comment, but said a statement is forthcoming.
