Oakland Museum Of California Burglarized; Suspect Arrested
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - Several items were taken from display cases at the Oakland Museum of California late Monday night, the museum's executive director said Tuesday.
The burglary triggered a security alarm at the museum, located at 1000 Oak St., which alerted an on-duty guard of the break-in just before midnight, executive director Lori Fogarty said.
Fogarty said several items of value were taken from one of the museum's galleries, which chronicle the history of California, but said she could not disclose details because Oakland police are still investigating the case.
"Beyond any monetary value, they are historical items," she said. "We are very disappointed and saddened."
Fogarty said she hopes police will recover the items quickly.
Police have released few details about the case but said Tuesday morning they had arrested a suspect in the burglary.
Surveillance footage from the museum has been handed off to police investigators, Fogarty said.
The museum is regularly closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but will open as scheduled on Wednesday, she said.
No injuries were reported, and security personnel did not come into contact with any intruders.
Fogarty said this is the first break-in she has been aware of during her tenure at the museum.
