Oakland Man Dies On Father's Day Fishing Trip After Falling Into Water
ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- An Oakland man died after apparently falling into the water near the Antioch Marina during a Father's Day fishing trip.
Carlos Arriola, 52, was on a fishing trip in Antioch with friends from an Oakland church group Sunday when the death occurred, according to police and a Contra Costa County coroner's deputy.
Arriola and his friends were fishing in the Dow Wetlands Preserve a short time before noon when he went into the water, possibly falling and hitting his head on some rocks, according to police.
The victim's friends went into the water to help him and attempted CPR, but emergency responders arriving a short time later pronounced him dead at the scene, Antioch police Lt. John Vanderklugt said.
"It happened very quickly and is a very tragic and unfortunate accident," Vanderklugt said.
The coroner's office is working today to determine Arriola's cause of death. Investigators do not know whether he drowned or suffered a head injury, a coroner's deputy said.
