OAKLAND (CBS SF) - California Highway Patrol officers were searching for suspects in a hit-and-run that killed a 72-year-old man who was walking across southbound Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland early Monday morning, a CHP officer said.
About six witnesses reported seeing the man crawling across I-880 just south of Park Street at about 12:30 a.m., CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.
The crash closed the three southbound left lanes, which were reopened after about an hour at about 2 a.m., Caggiano said.
A Sig-alert was first issued at about 12:45 a.m. closing all southbound I-880 lanes just south of 29th Avenue.
The CHP has no information about the suspect vehicle that killed the man, he said.
