Oakland Freeway Shooting Investigation Snarls Traffic On I-880
OAKLAND (KPIX 5) -- A shooting investigation on a freeway in Oakland snarled traffic Sunday evening.
The CHP said the incident began with a multi-car crash near the High Street off-ramp of Interstate 880 around 5 p.m.
A silver Mercedes SUV traveling northbound on I-880 was traveling on the shoulder, passing cars at a high rate of speed when it tried to merge into the slow lane, striking a Toyota minivan, and a Toyota sedan, according to the CHP. The Mercedes driver fled the scene, leaving the car behind. Shortly after, the CHP received reports that the driver who fled the crash was involved in a shooting on the High Street off ramp just north of the collision scene.
The crash left two people injured, who were transported to a local hospital. The Oakland police department was assisting the Highway Patrol with the shooting investigation.
