Oakland Considering $202 Million Plan To Run Streetcars Down 3-Mile Strip Of Broadway
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Streetcars might be making a comeback in Oakland, but the price tag is steep.
The city is considering a plan to run a streetcar along three miles of Broadway from MacArthur BART to Jack London Square after a second public hearing last week.
After a $300,000 study in 2003, city officials concluded the streetcar would be a benefit to the community and applied for another $250,000 in 2010 to continue the study.
"Shuttle ridership in uptown and downtown has blossomed in the past few years, and we want to extend that energy north," Zach Seal, an economic development expert behind the project told SFGate.
Councilmembers could greenlight the $202 million project as soon as next year.
Oakland had a streetcar system that lasted until around World War II.
