Oakland Amtrak Train Station Evacuated During Bomb Threat
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- No explosives were found during a search of an Amtrak train and station in Oakland Tuesday night despite a secondhand report a bomb on a train bound for Bakersfield, an Oakland police officer said.
Officers responded to the Oakland-Jack London Square Amtrak station located at 2nd and Alice streets after receiving the secondhand report at 5:32 p.m. of a bomb threat, Officer J. Moore said.
It was unclear who reported the threat, Moore said, but that the report indicated an explosive could detonate at the station sometime between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Police contacted the California Highway Patrol, who began a search for the device at about 7 p.m., Moore said.
A representative from Amtrak said that the agency did not have information available about the nature of the bomb threat, but that police activity at the station forced an evacuation of the station at about 6 p.m.
Amtrak spokeswoman Danelle Hunter said the agency also evacuated 13 passengers from the train, No. 718, which was scheduled to leave Oakland at 5:50 p.m.
Hunter said that the Alameda County Sheriff's Office assisted Oakland and Amtrak police with the response.
The search was completed at around 8:30 p.m. and the investigation was ongoing, Moore said.
