Oakland Airport May Be Pulling Out Of Slump
OAKLAND (KCBS) – The recession dealt a heavy blow to Oakland Airport with significant drops in passenger numbers for the past several years. But a new State of the Airport report stated there's evidence the trend is turning around.
After peaking in 2007 at 14.6 million, Oakland International's passengers numbers spiraled downward every year, reaching just 9.5 million last year.
"The airline industry continues to be one that is very challenging," said Director of Aviation Deborah Ali Flint.
She said 40,000 more passengers have used the airport this year than last year, and though modest, it's a sign of slight growth and a direction they'd like to maintain.
KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:
"The airport works very closely with our carriers to show them the opportunities that exist within certain markets, and for doing business here in Oakland," said Ali Flint.
Most recently the airport worked with Volares to add nonstop service to Mexico City. Flint said that extending conveniences to the airport itself is also a priority, as evidenced by last month's opening of a new welcome area in Terminal 1.
"This area is pre-security, so that passengers and their loved ones can enjoy it and have moments in a great environment," said Ali Flint.
