Numbers Show Voluntary Bay Area Water Cutbacks Aren't Doing Enough To Ease Drought
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Governor Brown asked Californians to cut water use by 20 percent back in January, citing "alarming" water supply deficiencies. It doesn't look like he's getting much cooperation from constituents.
The San Francisco Chronicle reviewed records from the largest local agencies and found that few municipalities are even approaching that goal.
In San Francisco residents have reduced water use by about 8 percent, short of the city's own 10 percent goal.
In San Jose, water use in the first quarter of the year has actually increased over the same period in 2013.
The newspapaer reports that East Bay Municipal Utility District customers have cut consumption significantly over last year, and added a new source of water from the Sacramento River.
State officials are expected to meet later this month to decide what additional conservation measures need to be put in place.
