Novato Teenager Sentenced In Deadly DUI Crash
NOVATO (BCN) - A Novato teen was sentenced to two years in Marin County Juvenile Hall Thursday for a September crash that killed a 15-year-old Novato High School boy and injured three other students.
In November, the teen, now 17, admitted gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and an enhancement alleging he caused great bodily injury and death, Marin County Deputy District Attorney Yvette Martinez said Friday morning.
The teen, who is not being identified because he is a minor, could have been sentenced to four years in custody or a diversion program that would not require him to remain in custody, Martinez said.
He will be able to earn his high school diploma while in juvenile hall, she said.
The teens were riding in a BMW that spun out west of San Marin Drive into the path of an eastbound tractor-trailer hauling cattle around 11:50 a.m., the CHP said.
Isaac Brott, 15, was killed in the crash while the driver and three other teens were injured, including two 17-year-old boys who were ejected into a field, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver of the 2005 Kenworth big-rig was not injured.
Marin County Superior Court Judge Lynn Duryee could have sentenced the driver to 14 years in prison if he were an adult at the time of the crash, Martinez said.
"We're happy with the outcome," she said.
Defense attorney Kevin Heaney was not available for comment Friday morning.
