North Bay Mother Arrested In Baby Smothering Death

SAN RAFAEL (AP) - Authorities have arrested a 23-year-old woman accused of falling asleep and smothering her baby at a San Rafael homeless shelter.

Melissa Lambert of Fort Bragg was taken into custody on Tuesday.  She was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of manslaughter and child abuse in the December death of her 9-week-old girl.

San Rafael police said Lambert was breast-feeding the infant in bed when she fell asleep and rolled on top of her.  Holton has admitted to injecting heroin less than 24 hours before the baby's death, according to police.

An autopsy showed the baby had methamphetamine in her system.  San Rafael police spokesman Charly Taylor says Lambert apparently transferred the drug to the girl through her breast milk.

Taylor did not know whether Lambert had obtained an attorney.
