NorCal Christmas Tree Begins Cross-Country Trek To U.S. Capitol
SONORA, (CBS SF / AP) -- A 65-foot white fir tree was on its way from a Northern California forest to the United States Capitol after being cut down Saturday morning.
The U.S. Capitol Christmas tree, which was being transported by truck from the Stanislaus National Forest in the Sierra Nevada mountains, will be on display as part of a nationwide tour that begins in the community of Sonora on Saturday afternoon.
Officials said the tree was selected based on its shape and fullness and color.
During its jaunt across the country, members of the public will able to see the tree during stops in various cities including Sacramento on Wednesday and Fresno on Friday.
The tree is scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 28, with a lighting ceremony at the front of the U.S. Capitol on Dec. 6.
