No Bridge Walk for GGB Anniversary
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) _ Unlike its 50th birthday in 1987, the Golden Gate Bridge will not close down its roadway to celebrate its 75th Anniversary in 2012.
Security concerns, construction projects and other issues have led bridge officials to nix plans for a mass bridge walk.
During the celebrations in 1987, the Golden Gate Bridge District expected 50,000 walkers for a celebratory walk on the iconic span.

But instead, 300,000 showed up.
Bridge District spokesperson Mary Currie said although they won't be holding a walk, they will still celebrate in style.
"We're envisioning more of a long-term celebration. For example, we'll be kicking off the 75th Anniversary festivities at the Marin County Fair next summer in 2011," Currie said. "And then continuing on for the next year with various events that will celebrate and honor the 75th Anniversary of the bridge."
The Golden Gate Bridge District took a big financial hit because of the 1987 celebration.
