Daily Madden: NFL Scouts Seek Run Blockers At Senior Bowl
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - There are reports that NFL scouts will be paying close attention to run blocking at the college Senior Bowl this weekend. "It's interesting how that flip-flopped," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
"Coming out of college it used to be every offensive lineman could run block and couldn't pass protect... Now it's flip-flopped and it's flip-flopped in all areas. It's not just college into pro, but it's high school into college and college into pro.
"Now it's can the lineman run block, when before it used to be can he pass block... Even if you were a passing team, you knew that there were times in the game to protect the lead, short yardage goal line, whatever, and you had to play smash-mouth (run blocking)."
Meanwhile, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the league is considering expanding the number of wild card teams to add more playoff games. Madden said it's all about money.
"I think they're going to add another (TV) package," Madden said. "It's going to include Thursday night games, it's going to include some Saturday and it's going to include extra playoffs. And I think that will be sold to another carrier."
