Newsom Campaign Announces Date For Post-Inaugural Celebration
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- The exact date of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's swearing-in as lieutenant governor of the state still remains unclear, but his campaign announced Friday the date of his post-inaugural celebration will be Jan. 10.
The timing of Newsom's departure from San Francisco has been richly debated in recent weeks, as the Board of Supervisors weighs its nomination of a mayoral replacement to hold the office for the next year.
The next mayoral election is scheduled for November 2011.
Newsom's campaign issued a statement Friday saying his inaugural celebration will take place Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. at the State Capital Rotunda in Sacramento.
The statement went on to note that Newsom will be formally sworn in as lieutenant governor "on or before this date.
Newsom had been scheduled to be sworn in Jan. 3. Gov.-elect Jerry Brown and Attorney General-elect Kamala Harris are both being sworn in that day.
But a mayoral spokesman said Wednesday that Newsom will "likely" delay his swearing-in a few days in order to complete "a few important projects" and ensure a stable transition for the next mayor.
A spokesman for the campaign confirmed today that Newsom will not be sworn in Monday, but said the actual swearing-in date has not yet been determined.
Newsom has said he would like to prevent the appointment of a "radical" mayor by the current board, which meets for the last time Tuesday, a day after Newsom's scheduled swearing-in date for lieutenant governor.
Four new supervisors will join the board on Jan. 8, and the makeup of that body is considered slightly more moderate and possibly closer to Newsom's politics.
