Newark Burglary Suspect Involved In Fatal Crash Dies Of Injuries
NEWARK (CBS SF) - One of three burglary suspects involved in a crash that killed another driver in Newark last week has died, police said Monday morning.
Rajwaun Watkins, 20, of Oakland, was pronounced dead Friday evening at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he was taken in critical condition after the Wednesday morning crash.
Police had responded to a report of a home burglary on Mistflower Avenue shortly before 10 a.m. that day. A witness reported seeing three people kick down his neighbor's door and enter the home, police said.
He gave police a description of the intruders and their car, a Chevrolet Malibu, and police spotted the car driving away from the neighborhood.
Officers tried to pull it over, but the driver accelerated south on Cedar Boulevard at speeds of almost 80 mph, according to police.
Police said they discontinued the chase because it was too dangerous.
The driver continued speeding away, and crashed into a Honda at Cherry Street and Mowry Avenue. The driver of the Honda, Robert Louis Cheney, 69, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspects' car overturned, and two of the suspects ran away but were soon apprehended. All three were taken to hospitals.
The other two suspects, who were less severely injured, have been identified as Jabrie Watts and Deshon Collier, both 20.
Watts, who has addresses in Oakland and Hayward, is being held on a parole violation. Collier, who has lived in San Leandro, Union City and Hayward, is being held on a probation violation, police said.
Police said all three had extensive criminal histories.
