New Year Brings Safety Improvements At South Bay Caltrain Crossings

MOUNTAIN VIEW (KCBS) - Wider sidewalks, new fences and guard rails, and more signs will be added at major Caltrain crossings in the South Bay, starting in January with Charleston Road in Palo Alto.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

The $5.8 million project funded by the Valley Transportation Authority includes work at five other crossings in Sunnyvale, Mountain View and elsewhere in Palo Alto.

Caltrain has made changes at several crossings in recent years because of a number of trackside deaths, including several suicides.

Eleven people died on the tracks in 2010 compared to 19 in 2009.
