New Target Store Brings Jobs To Oakland, Emeryville
OAKLAND/EMERYVILLE (KCBS) – A new Target Store on the border of Oakland and Emeryville is expected to bring plenty of business and jobs to the area.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the 140,000-square-foot store on Tuesday, and Emeryville Mayor Nora Davis said it has already brought hundreds of jobs to an area that has been economically distressed.
KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:
"They focused on local hiring. They had an employment office right down the street," said Davis. "We're confident that people in this community will have good jobs here."
Previously, the space was a Kmart and a Home Design Expo. Davis said the new store is a great example of what redevelopment funds can mean to an urban community.
Target spokesman Donna Egan said they received more than 4,000 applications for the open positions.
"We were inundated with applications and we're so excited that we can have team members here working in the store that reflect the community," said Egan.
Target has committed funds to the school district and the Alameda County Food Bank. Tax revenue will be split between Emeryville and Oakland, as the shopping plaza straddles both cities.
The store is scheduled to open for business on Wednesday and a grand opening celebration is planned for Sunday.
