New Bay Bridge Bolts To Take A Month Longer To Fix
OAKLAND (CBS / AP) -- State transportation officials said it will take a month longer to complete the permanent fix for the giant steel bolts that snapped on the new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
The Contra Costa Times reports that work the $23 million custom steel saddles designed to carry seismic loads originally intended for the defective anchor rods is behind schedule and will be fully operational by January 8.
Caltrans spokesman Andrew Gordon said workers had hoped to be done by December 10, they say fabrication was very complex and took longer than expected.
The temporary shims, which allowed officials to open the new span on Labor Day, will remain in place until the saddles are installed.
The work on the fix below the decks will not impede traffic.
