Matthew Dellavedova, Cavaliers Cheered On By Saint Mary's Teammates In NBA Finals
WALNUT CREEK (KPIX 5) – While Saint Mary's College is a few miles away from the home of the Warriors, teammates of Matthew Dellavedova are cheering on his Cleveland Cavailers in the NBA Finals.
Coach Randy Bennett and Dellavedova's former classmates set their Warriors allegiances aside and cheered on the former Gael at a watch party Tuesday at the 1515 Restaurant and Lounge in Walnut Creek.
Unlike the blue and gold that is present at most NBA Finals watch parties around here, these fans were wearing blue and red, the colors of St. Mary's.
"It's a sense of pride for everybody at St. Mary's," school athletic director Mark Orr told KPIX 5.
Fans at the cheered on the man they call "Delly," however apologetically.
"Ultimately, I hope the Cavaliers win," Orr said. "I'm sorry, Warriors fans! My allegiance is with St. Mary's as much as I can."
Bennett said, "I definitely cheer for Matt and so I cheer for his team."
Dellavedova is in his second year with the Cavaliers. He's started for the team in the last six games and he scored 20 points Tuesday night, helping the Cavs to their second win in a row over the Warriors.
"We will cheer every single minute he's in the ballgame and hopefully he does well for the Cavaliers," Orr said.
