Navy Giving Old Alameda Air Station To City

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/AP) - The Navy is turning over its 918-acre former naval air station property to the city of Alameda.

After 14 years of price bickering, Alameda is getting the old shoreline base for free.

Mayor Marie Gilmore said it's good news for the city. Alameda has seen several development deals collapse because the Navy held title to the property.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

The city expects to see 6,000 new jobs and 2,700 units of housing at the property, which comprises a third of the island but has been mostly vacant since the Navy left in 1997.
