SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The 2011 Wild Oats Shiraz from the central ranges of Australia has a medium, deep garnet color and bright-deep spicy aroma of fully ripe berries. Its Earthy quality is very inviting with a medium to light mouthfeel. It's light enough for a red summer wine with plenty of tannin for balance. It has a very nice price of $14.99 a bottle and the fruit will linger on your palate.
The 2012 Dry Creek Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel comes from 90 to 100-year-old vines, which produces the grape's deep-concentrated color. They only produce one or two tons per acre. Its taste is reserved, but has concentrated berry aromas. Ripe raspberries lead to a concentration of flavor. Firm, but not hard tannin makes for a splendid backbone. Spiciness lingers long on the palate and is beautifully balanced.
This wine is already drinkable with barbecue or a rich, meaty pasta, but it will improve beautifully with some aging and at $30, it's a very nice value.
