SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Summer's almost over, but it's still a good time to enjoy chardonnay. The 2012 Rodney Strong Chardonnay from Sonoma County is bright with spring peaches in the aroma. It has a delicious balance on the palate with a slight citrus note. Crips acidity makes for a perfect balance on the palate and it's a nice wine to serve with sautéed fish or chicken.
The balance of acidity and fruit is really appealing and the price of $75 is certainly fair.

Another you should try is from the J. Lohr Vineyard Series, The 2012 October Night Chardonnay. This comes from the Arroyo Seco area of Monterey and has a light straw color with tropical fruit aromas. It's a soft, easy to drink wine. A touch of oak from the barrel aging gives a hint of vanilla and soft richness lingers on the palate. The price of a bottle is only $25.
The 2011 Dry Creek Valley Old Vine Zinfandel possesses a deep purplish-red color. Lush, ripe berry aromas lend to a truly exciting mouthful of wine. Complex, bright fruit flavors without any of the lingering sweetness that plagues so many zinfandels these days makes this one of the best 2011's I've tasted. At $30 a bottle you could drink it with a steak now, but try to let it age for a few years.
