Mysterious Rock Found In Novato May Be Meteorite After All
NOVATO (CBS/AP) -- A mysterious rock that hit a Novato home may be a meteorite after all.
Lisa Webber's roof was struck during last week's meteor shower that lit up skies over the San Francisco Bay area.
Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute in Mountain View examined the 2-inch chunk and pronounced it a meteorite, then later decided it was just weathered Earth granite.
But Jenniskens told the San Francisco Chronicle he's changed his mind again because an amateur meteorite hunter found another rock in the Novato area on Monday that showed the telltale sign of a meteorite—tiny specks of metal.
Jenniskens said he'll send samples of both rocks to a UCLA expert for detailed analysis.
