Multi-Vehicle Hit-And-Run Crash Snarls Westbound Bay Bridge Traffic
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Authorities issued a severe traffic alert Thursday afternoon when a multiple vehicle hit-and-run collision blocked the three westbound lanes of the Bay Bridge west of Treasure Island for an hour.
At about 2:30 p.m., CHP reported that the accident was causing traffic into San Francisco to back up due to the three left lanes at the center anchorage being blocked.
CHP later confirmed that the accident involved three vehicles. Two of the cars involved fled the scene, but one returned to the location, driving back to the scene in the wrong direction on the bridge. That driver was arrested
One suspect vehicle is still outstanding.
Footage from the SalesForce Tower camera showed multiple CHP and fire rescue units on the scene. Two people were hurt in the collision, including an infant.
The scene was cleared and all lanes reopened at about 3:22 p.m., just over an hour after the accident.
Shortly afterwards, there was a second multi-vehicle crash on the bridge, but that incident was cleared within 20 minutes.
