Muir Beach Access Closing For Summer To Protect Salmon
MARIN COUNTY (KCBS)—The parking lot and pedestrian areas of Muir Beach are closing this July as an attempt to protect an endangered species of salmon is made, the National Park Service said.
The parking area of the popular summer destination will be closed on July 8 through the Thanksgiving holiday.
The National Parks Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy will close down the existing parking lot to begin the reconstruction and restoration of the Redwood Creek channel as it heads into the Pacific Ocean to create a better route for coho salmon -- whose numbers have dwindled since the creek was re-routed decades ago.

"The coho salmon population exists there but it needs the natural creek meander to help the population thrive," Jennifer Green, a volunteer for the parks conservancy, said.
While cars won't be allowed to the beach area, visitors will still be able to use hiking trails to get to Muir Beach.
