Mountain View Teen, Grandmother Shot Dead While On Oregon Trip
LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. (KCBS) - A teenage boy from the Bay Area and his grandmother were shot to death by a relative Monday at a home near Portland, Oregon, police said.
Police arrested 41-year-old Adrien Graham Wallace in connection with the slaying of his nephew, 16-year-old Nicolas Juarez of Mountain View, and his mother, 71-year-old Saundra Wallace, whom the boy was visiting.
Adrien Wallace was arraigned on two charges of aggravated murder Tuesday in Clackamas County Circuit Court and was due back in court Friday. The Oregonian reported he was jailed without bail and was on suicide watch.
According to court documents, deputies say he confessed to shooting his mother and his nephew in the face with a hunting rifle Monday evening "as they tried to leave."
Sheriff's documents released Tuesday offered no motive.
Juarez was an outgoing junior at St. Francis High School who played drums in the Mountain View school's jazz band and in its marching band, said Amy Wilhelm, a parent who heads the band boosters.
"This is a big crater that came and hit the Saint Francis band program and just left this giant, gaping hole," she said.
KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:
Juarez had just been named drum captain. Wilhelm said he was a talented musician who brought an encouraging spirit to the school.
"He would come up to my daughter and congratulate her on how she did in the track meet," she said, "just so nice and so friendly."
Juarez's bandmates will play at a memorial service scheduled for June 11.
