Motorcyclist Killed In Crash On Highway 101 In Sunnyvale
SUNNYVALE (CBS SF) - A 22-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle crash on southbound U.S. Highway 101 in Sunnyvale early Friday morning, according to a California Highway Patrol officer.
Binh Nguyen, a Sunnyvale resident, was identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office as the motorcyclist killed in an accident reported on southbound Highway 101 near North Fair Oaks Avenue around midnight.
Nguyen was on a motorcycle heading south when he hit a wood pallet in his lane, CHP Officer Chris Falkowski said.
He was ejected from the motorcycle and landed in an adjacent lane.
Moments later, a man driving a Honda Accord was heading south in that lane, did not see Nguyen and struck him, Falkowski said.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Honda driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the fatal crash, Falkowski said.
The CHP was investigating how the pallet got onto the roadway. Falkowski said there were no reports of a traffic hazard in the area before the crash.
All southbound lanes of Highway 101 were shut down for about 10 minutes after the crash and then partially reopened. The entire freeway was opened around 2 a.m., he said.
