Mother, Son Riding Bicycles Hit By Car In Newark
NEWARK (CBS SF) - A mother and her 5-year-old son who were riding their bicycles in a Newark intersection were injured when they were struck by a car Wednesday evening, according to Newark police.
The collision at the intersection of Newark Boulevard and Ruschin Drive, near Newark Community Park, was reported to police at 8:07 p.m.
Police Sgt. Manuel DeSerpa said a family of three, including a mother, father and child, were in a crosswalk when the woman and boy were struck by a vehicle traveling north on Newark Boulevard.
DeSerpa said a citizen pulled the child out from under the vehicle and gave life-saving first aid.
He said the child suffered serious injuries and the mother suffered moderate injuries. The two, whose names have not been made public, were taken to a local trauma center, DeSerpa said.
The driver of the car was a 72-year-old woman who also has not been identified, DeSerpa said. Police said she stopped and remained at the scene until officers arrived, and is cooperating with the investigation.
DeSerpa said alcohol and drugs are not considered a factor in the collision.
