Mother, Child In Crosswalk Seriously Hurt By Speeding Driver In Fremont
FREMONT (KCBS) — A mother and a small child were hospitalized after being hit by a car while crossing a street Wednesday morning in Fremont, a fire official said.
Police called it a senseless and absolutely unnecessary incident which was caused when two drivers were racing and one backed down while the other lost control.
Fremont fire crews responded just before 11 a.m. to a report of an accident involving a vehicle and pedestrians, Battalion Chief Rich Dickinson said.
A 43-year-old woman was in a crosswalk at Fremont and Peralta boulevards with two children, Dickinson said. She was pushing her 1-year-old girl in a stroller with her young son riding along on a tricycle when a white car hit the woman and the girl in the stroller, he said.
Police spokesman Bill Veteran said the vehicle came onto the sidewalk.
Dickinson said the driver was speeding west on Peralta Boulevard when he attempted to make a right onto northbound Fremont Boulevard and lost control of his vehicle, hitting the woman, the 1-year-old and a red car headed south on Fremont Boulevard. Police said the driver may have been going at speeds of up to 70 mph on the city streets.
The mother was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley and the child in the stroller was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland. Both had serious head injuries, he said.
The 21-year-old driver was transported to Washington Hospital in Fremont with minor injuries, Dickinson said. He has also been arrested. The boy was not injured, according to Dickinson.
The intersection remained closed early Wednesday afternoon, and motorists were being advised to avoid the area.
