Morgan Hill Residents Warned Following Rash Of Burglaries
MORGAN HILL (BCN) - Morgan Hill police were reminding residents to take all necessary precautions to protect themselves against burglars following a rash of vehicle, home, and business thefts over the last six months.
Burglaries are on the rise and are continuing to occur, according to police. Since July 31, 2010, there have been 176 reports, including 107 vehicle, 31 commercial, and 38 residential thefts, police said.
In the same time span, 41 cars have been reported stolen.
It appeared that most of the auto and commercial burglaries have been occurring Monday through Thursday, between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
Many of the residential burglaries were reported during the day when residents tend to be away from home, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Police have made some arrests in connection with the thefts and are reminding residents to prevent future incidents by practicing some safety measures. These include: shutting car windows, locking the doors and removing purses, wallets, radios, phones, laptops and other valuable items from unattended vehicles.
Residents are asked to take similar procedures at home, such as locking all doors and windows when they are away, leaving a light or radio on to trick burglars into thinking someone may be home, and installing an alarm system or motion-sensing lights around the exterior of the home.
There have been reports of garage door remotes being stolen from inside vehicles, so police are urging anyone in a similar situation to call the Police Department and, if possible, to change the code to the garage door opener or unplug it.
