More Rain In Phoenix Ahead Of Super Bowl Than We've Seen In SF All Year

KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.

Q: Hey, Roberta. I live in Phoenix. Do you realize we actually have been wetter than you guys in SF this month of January? –Marc Chatow; Phoenix

A: Yes, I have noticed! And I'm not happy!

For those lucky enough to score Super Bowl tickets, it will be sunny and 70 degrees on Sunday. But if you are traveling today or tomorrow, you will need an umbrella.

The weather in Phoenix has been interesting. I have noticed for a number of years it has been raining more, and the Haboobs or Monsoon storms (wind storms) are occurring more than usual. Instead of 1 or 2 times a year, they now occur about 5 to 6 times a year and appear more intense, stronger in nature. In addition, more record overnight lows temperatures have been recorded. A lot of this is being attributed to the "Urban Heat Island Effect" which will take another blog to describe and explain!

So far this month of January, Phoenix has received 0.39" of rain (and it is raining today and tomorrow) compared to San Francisco's historic .00" for the month of January.

During this Super Bowl 2015 Weekend in the month of January, what are the odds of a Desert City accumulating more rain in one day than a Northern California Bay City? My bet is on Phoenix.

I would love to hear from you! Please send weather questions, observations and photos to me, Gonzales@kpix.cbs.com and I look forward to hearing from you!

Have a great weekend!
