Overcrowded SUV Crashes In Modesto; 1 Dead, Several Injured
MODESTO (CBS/AP) -- Authorities say one person is dead and at least six people were hurt when the driver of sport utility vehicle packed with passengers lost control of the SUV and it crashed on a Modesto roadway.
Police say there were 12 people riding in the SUV, which is designed to hold eight people, when it veered off the road around 12:30 p.m. Friday and rolled several times.
Modesto Police Sgt. Ivan Valencia told the Modesto Bee that several people riding in the SUV were not wearing seatbelts.
Some of the victims were treated at the scene, while seven people were taken to hospitals. One of those hospitalized was an 18-year-old man, who died from his injuries.
His name has not been released.
Police say alcohol or drugs do not appear to have been a factor in the crash.
