Mirkarimi Trial Date Set For February
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -San Francisco's sheriff is set to stand trial next month on misdemeanor domestic violence charges stemming from a New Year's Eve dispute with his wife.
Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi had requested a speedy trial, saying he wanted to reunite soon with his wife and child, whom he's prohibited from contacting until the case is resolved.
A judge on Monday set a Feb. 24 trial date. A pretrial hearing also is scheduled for Feb. 16.
Mirkarimi is facing one count each of domestic violence battery, child endangerment and dissuading a witness in connection with a New Year's Eve incident with his wife. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
He's also due in court on Thursday, where he will request a modification of a stay-away order.
In the order issued by San Francisco Superior Court Judge Susan Breall, Mirkarimi is prohibited from having any contact with his wife, Eliana Lopez, or their 2-year-old son.

The 50-year-old Mirkarimi, who was sworn into office as sheriff earlier this month, has vowed to remain in office and fight the charges.
