Minimum Wage Set To Increase In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/997 NOW) - Good news for those who work in San Francisco and make minimum wage. The city is set to make history on January 1st, 2012 when its minimum wage increases by 32 cents. San Francisco's minimum wage will increase from $9.92 to $10.24.
San Francisco will be the first city to have a minimum wage above ten dollars, two dollars above the state minimum. The automatic increase stems from a law passed in 2004 that requires that the minimum wage be directly tied to inflation, which is why we see San Francisco's minimum wage increase every year.
San Francisco is among eight cities around the country that will be raising their minimum wage in the new year. However, we are clearly ahead of most. California itself has the minimum wage rate of $8 an hour. A full-time employee in California making minimum wage will earn about $16,000 a year. In San Francisco a full-time employee earning minimum wage in San Francisco will earn about $21,000 a year.
