Milpitas Man Killed In I-880 Crash In San Jose
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A 19-year-old Milpitas man was killed in a solo vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 880 in San Jose Saturday morning that investigators believe was caused by drug or alcohol intoxication, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim was a passenger in a 2010 silver Chevrolet Cobalt that was traveling north on 880 shortly after 1:30 a.m. when the crash occurred, CHP officials said.
The Chevy's driver, a 19-year-old San Jose man, lost control of the speeding vehicle for an unknown reason and struck a dirt embankment at the Old Bayshore Highway off-ramp and then a ditch, officials said.
The passenger was ejected, and the Chevy came to rest south of the Old Bayshore Highway on-ramp.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver, who sustained major injuries, was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators believe drug or alcohol intoxication was a factor in the crash, officials said.
