Michael Brown's Father Speaks In San Francisco During Weekend Of Mass Protest
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— The father of the young unarmed black man killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri this summer was in San Francisco this past weekend as part of a city-to-city speaking tour across the country.
Michael Brown Sr. thanked community members for their support since the shooting and the grand jury's decision to not indict officer Darren Wilson in his son's killing.
Brown addressed a packed house at the Third Baptist Church of San Francisco Sunday afternoon. He told the mostly African-American crowd that he was sorry he couldn't make it to Oakland or Sacramento, where large crowds turned out to protest police shootings of unarmed black men like his son.
He said he wants community members to stand strong and called the looting that has been interspersed with the protests "disrespectful".
"We got a major fight going on and I got to stand up, so that's all I'm doing is standing up for our rights," said Brown.
San Francisco supervisors Malia Cohen and London Breed also spoke at the event.
Just days after the grand jury decision in the Brown case was announced, a grand jury in New York found no reason to indict police involved in the choking death of Eric Garner who was alleged to have been selling un-taxed cigarettes. His death was caught on video by a bystander.
