Mexico To Face Chile In 1st International Soccer Match At Levi's Stadium

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) -- The new home of the San Francisco 49ers will host its first international soccer match in September, the fourth sporting event held at the newly-opened facility.

The Santa Clara Stadium Authority and the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday announced World Cup 2014 participants Mexico and Chile will meet at Levi's Stadium on Saturday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m.

The match against 12th-ranked Chile is the first of two games in the United States for the 18th-ranked Mexican National Team in September, ahead of a September 9 matchup against Bolivia in Denver.

El Tricolor's visit to Levi's Stadium will be Mexico's first in Bay Area since 2013 when it played Peru to a 0-0 draw at Candlestick Park. The last time Mexico and Chile faced off against each other was in September 2011, a 1-0 win for Mexico.

Both teams advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Earthquakes have partnered with the 49ers stadium authority to bring international soccer events to both Levi's Stadium and the new Earthquakes Stadium, scheduled to open for the 2015 Major League Soccer season.

Levi's Stadium is just days away from its first sporting event, a San Jose Earthquakes soccer match against the Seattle Sounders on August 2. The first 49ers games at the stadium will be two preseason matchups against the Denver Broncos (August 17 on KPIX 5) and the San Diego Chargers (August 24).

The 49ers will play the Chicago Bears in the first NFL regular season game at Levi's Stadium in a nationally-televised Sunday prime-time matchup on September 14.
