Menlo Park Dry Cleaners Under Investigation, May Have Overcharged Customers $200K
MENLO PARK (KPIX 5) – Some dry cleaning customers in Menlo Park said they are getting more than just clean clothes. The owner of the business is accused of putting thousands of extra dollars on customers' credit cards.
Police said Menalto Cleaners is under investigation because about $200,000 has been stolen from customers.
"The only thing I can say because this is an active investigation, at this point no one has been charged, no one is under arrest, that this is a credit card fraud," said Commander Dave Bertini of Menlo Park Police.
Bertini said the investigation started with 7 victims last month. But then they found more evidence after searching the cleaners and a home nearby.
"And from that search warrant that occurred on Tuesday morning, we've been able to obtain the names of almost 30 victims," Bertini said. "So at this point, what we're trying to do is trying to track down any other victims that may have been defrauded."
The owner, E. Gary Smith, has not been charged with any crimes. KPIX 5 contacted Smith at his business and he had no comment on the recent police searches.
Police said customers should check the last three years of credit card statements. Victims are asked to contact the Menlo Park Police Department.
