Mayor Schaaf Says If Warriors Become Champs, Parade Will Be In Oakland
OAKLAND (KCBS)— Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf doesn't want to jinx anything, but she says if the Warriors win the NBA Finals, the victory parade will be in Oakland. The mayor and downtown merchants alike are counting on Dub Nation to behave itself and celebrate peacefully.
Schaaf knows the Warriors still need to beat Cleveland to claim their first NBA crown in 40 years, but if they do, she's ready for the City of Oakland to host the civic celebration even if the team plans on moving to San Francisco.
"Mayor Ed Lee agrees that the parade should be in Oakland. This is the home court for this incredible team," said Schaaf.
Schaaf said she and the police will take every precaution to keep the streets safe as the spotlight shines on the East Bay. She also expects Warriors fans to behave themselves. Luan Stauss, owner of the Laurel Bookstore at 14th and Broadway, expects the same. Typically this area is ground zero when things get out of hand. Merchants, who have endured vandalism and damages after recent demonstrations that have led the mayor to call for a protest curfew, are hoping for the best.
"Anything that brings attention to Oakland as being a really cool place is great, but I am wary because when you get large groups of people, there's an element that likes to do destruction rather than celebration," Stauss said.
Rosie Taylor, a Warriors fan, said she sees no reason for anyone to misbehave.
"This is about winning a national championship. We are not going to burn down the city of Oakland. We are so proud that the Warriors have made it after 40 years."
