Martinez Marina Gets Funding For Dredging

MARTINEZ (KCBS) – The Martinez Marina, which serves as a key location for boaters looking to head either to the Delta or San Francisco Bay, has a major problem with mud buildup.

When the tide pulls away from the Marina, boaters are getting stuck. Despite sporadic dredging over the years, during low tide, it's filled with mud and silt.

But Martinez Marina Harbor Master Craig Paulsen said the city has come up with a million dollars to help with the problem.

"This dredge will encompass not only the fairways, but we're going to go under the docks as well," said Paulsen.

Some city leaders question whether the money is a good use of funds.

"They're not pouring that much money into it. Granted, a million dollars is a lot of money," said Paulsen. "But if you can build it up and get people putting their boats here, filling the Marina up, you'll have more revenue."

Pauslen said there are approximately 157 boats at the Marina now, but there is enough room for 267. He said he hopes dredging can be done on a more regular basis.
