Marine Sanctuary May Be Expanded To Waters West Of Golden Gate
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) - The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the largest ocean refuge in the continental United States, may be expanded to include the waters west of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will discuss the proposal during a Thursday evening public meeting at Fort Mason in San Francisco.
The San Jose Mercury News reports that expansion of sanctuary boundaries could lead to restrictions, including fireworks shows near the bridge to a ban on personal watercraft off the Marin Headlands.
President George H.W. Bush created the sanctuary two decades ago. It banned offshore oil drilling along 276 miles of California coast from the Marin Headlands to Hearst Castle.
