Marin County Aiming To Build New Year-Round Homeless Shelter
SAN RAFAEL (KCBS) – With the cold temperatures hitting the Bay Area this week, shelters are quickly filling up throughout the region, including in Marin County.
Unfortunately, those shelters are spread thin among dozens of churches struggling to provide help, which has led to a call for a new countywide shelter facility.
Marin County Aiming To Build New Year-Round Homeless Shelter
Larry Meredith, director of Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, said there are hundreds of homeless, and not enough shelter space to accommodate them.
"We need to take care of people who may have fallen on hard times or may be unable to help themselves," Meredith said. "That's what we do."
So the city of San Rafael and Marin County officials have teamed up to build a year-round facility to provide a safe harbor for the homeless.
A countywide committee has been looking at possible locations, perhaps in San Rafael or Novato.
Funding for the program however is still a question mark.
