Gunman Fatally Shoots 2 Deputies In Sacramento, Placer Counties, Suspect Arrested After 6-Hour Manhunt
SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) – A manhunt for a suspected gunman in the killings of two sheriffs deputies from Sacramento and Placer County was apprehended Friday afternoon at an Auburn home.
The Sacramento deputy was the first fatality, followed by the Placer County deputy killed in the line of duty during a crime spree that left one other law-enforcement officer and a civilian with gunshot wounds.
Officials said the suspect, 34-year-old Marcelo Marquez was handcuffed and taken into custody from inside a home on Belmont Drive near downtown Auburn.
Officials don't have a motive for the two-county crime spree and manhunt that lasted roughly six hours.
Sacramento County spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman said it started when the suspect shot a civilian in the head when that person refused to give up the keys to a vehicle Friday morning.
Bowman said the deputy was approaching that vehicle in a parking lot around 10:30 a.m. in the commercial Arden Way area of Sacramento near a Motel 6 when he was shot.
"The person who was inside of the vehicle shot rounds at the officer," she said. She later said that "at least one shot was fired at our deputy, striking him at least one time."
On Friday afternoon, Sacramento Sheriffs officials confirmed that veteran Deputy Danny Oliver was killed in that incident. The Placer County Sheriff's Department said Deputy Michael David Davis Jr. was killed in the line of duty.
Sheriff Ed Bonner said Davis' father died 26 years ago to the day in a similar incident in Riverside County.
When the suspect fled the scene in a stolen truck, a Blue Alert was then issued by the California Highway Patrol for a red, 2002 Ford F-150 extended cab with California plate number 8J34411.
Placer County sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin told The Associated Press that two of her department's deputies were shot by the same assailant. The surviving deputy was shot in the arm and is expected to survive.
Erwin said a woman who was a passenger in the vehicle with the assailant had initially been taken into custody.
