Man Who Allegedly Shot At Oakland Officer After Crash Remains At Large
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A suspect who allegedly shot at an Oakland police sergeant after the officer crashed on Saturday night remains at large, police said Monday.
The sergeant was responding to a call at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when her patrol car was involved in a crash in the 1900 block of 73rd Avenue, police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.
Shortly after the crash, a male suspect approached the patrol vehicle and fired a round, striking the patrol car, Watson said.
Sources have since identified the officer as Sgt. Natalie Clark.
The sergeant wasn't struck by the gunshot, but was taken to a hospital to be treated for the injuries she suffered in the crash. She has since been released, according to Watson.
Police on Monday issued a new photo that shows the serious damage the police SUV sustained in the crash.
Authorities also released audio from the terrified police radio call the sergeant made after the crash Saturday night.
"Oh, I can't get out of the car," Sgt. Clark is heard saying on the recording. "Somebody just shot at me! I can't get out of the car!"
Watson said police arrested someone for an unrelated crime during their investigation of the shooting, but she didn't elaborate.
Oakland police haven't provided a description of the suspect and said, "The department's efforts continue to identify and locate the person responsible for this attack on our officer."
Since the police killings in Baton Rouge and Dallas, Oakland police officers have generally been working in pairs. The department said the officer who was injured was working alone because she is a supervisor.
Oakland police said anyone with information about the shooting should call their homicide unit at (510) 238-3821, their tip line at (510) 238-7950 or the Oakland Crime Stoppers tip line at (510) 777-8572.
